Standing water in the bottom of your dishwasher after a cycle always traces back to one of a small number of specific causes. Here's each one, and what actually fixing it involves.
1. Clogged Drain Filter
The most common cause by far. Most dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub that catches food particles, and it needs periodic cleaning. A clogged filter is often a five-minute fix you can do yourself: pull it out and rinse it under running water.
2. Blocked or Kinked Drain Hose
The hose running from the dishwasher to the drain or disposal can develop a kink behind the unit, or accumulate a clog of its own over time. This usually requires pulling the dishwasher out slightly to inspect and clear the hose.
3. Garbage Disposal Knockout Plug Left In
If a dishwasher was recently connected to a new garbage disposal, there's a knockout plug inside the disposal's inlet that has to be removed for the dishwasher to drain into it. This is easy to miss during installation and a common cause of drainage issues right after a new disposal is installed.
4. Failed Drain Pump
The drain pump physically pushes water out of the dishwasher. If the pump's impeller is jammed with debris or the motor itself has failed, water won't drain regardless of how clear the rest of the system is. This is a genuine parts-and-labor repair, not a quick fix.
5. Clogged High Loop or Air Gap
Depending on the installation, your dishwasher either has a high loop in the drain hose or a separate air gap fitting on the sink, both designed to prevent sink water from draining back into the dishwasher. Either one can become blocked and stop proper drainage.
6. Faulty Drain Valve or Solenoid
Some dishwashers use a valve or solenoid to control drainage timing. If it fails in the closed position, water can't drain even if everything else is working normally. This requires the same diagnosis and parts-based repair as a failed pump.
