Moving into a new home means inheriting appliances you didn't pick out and don't know the history of. Here's a practical way to get ahead of problems instead of discovering them the hard way.

Find and Record Every Model Number

Before anything else, locate the model number for each major appliance, usually on a sticker inside the door frame or on the back of the unit, and write it down or take a photo. Having this on hand before something breaks saves real time when you need a part or a service call.

Check the Age of Each Appliance

The model number often lets you look up the manufacture date, or the previous owner may have left manuals or receipts. Knowing roughly how old each appliance is helps you gauge how much life it likely has left, which matters the first time something needs a repair.

Test Everything in the First Week

Run a full cycle on the washer and dryer, run the dishwasher, check that the oven reaches temperature, and confirm the refrigerator and freezer are holding proper temperature. It's much easier to address an issue while you can still reasonably attribute it to the previous owner's use than to discover it weeks later.

Locate Water and Gas Shutoffs

Find the water shutoff valve behind the washer and, if applicable, the gas shutoff for a gas range or dryer. In an emergency, knowing where these are before you need them matters.

Clean What the Previous Owner Might Not Have

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils, and dishwasher filters are all things that benefit from a fresh cleaning when you move in, regardless of what the previous owner did or didn't maintain.
