How Long Do Appliances Really Last?

My Appliance Pro Team2026-08-13

Every appliance has a rough typical lifespan, but what actually determines how long yours lasts has more to do with usage and maintenance than the brand name on the front.

Typical Lifespans by Appliance

  • Refrigerators: Around 10 to 18 years, one of the widest ranges of any major appliance, largely because compressor quality and how hard the unit works day to day vary so much.
  • Washing machines: Around 10 to 13 years, with front-load and top-load units in a similar range.
  • Dryers: Around 10 to 13 years, similar to washers, though vent maintenance has an outsized effect on dryer longevity specifically.
  • Dishwashers: Around 9 to 10 years, generally the shortest-lived major kitchen appliance.
  • Ovens and ranges: Around 13 to 15 years, among the longer-lived appliances, since they have fewer moving parts than something like a washer or dishwasher.

These are general, widely cited ranges, not guarantees. Plenty of appliances beat these numbers with good care, and plenty fall short with heavy use or none at all.

What Actually Determines Lifespan More Than Brand

  • How hard it's used. A dishwasher run twice a day in a large household wears out faster than one run twice a week.
  • Basic maintenance. Cleaning a dryer vent, wiping a dishwasher filter, or checking a fridge's door seal are small habits that meaningfully extend an appliance's life.
  • How quickly small issues get addressed. A minor issue ignored often becomes a bigger, more expensive one. Repairing something small early is part of what gets an appliance to the upper end of its typical range.
  • Installation quality. An appliance installed correctly, with proper venting, water lines, and electrical connections, tends to have fewer preventable failures over its life.
