Washers: Water and Electronics Together
A washer's control board, motor, and electrical connections sit close to a system that's actively moving water. A DIY repair that involves accessing internal components carries a real risk of water intrusion into electronics, either during the repair or afterward if a seal isn't reinstalled correctly.
- Reasonably safe to DIY: Clearing a visible clog in a drain hose you can access without removing panels, or cleaning a lint filter or gasket.
- Better left to a professional: Anything requiring you to open the cabinet and work near the control board, motor, or internal wiring while water lines are still connected.
Dryers: Heat, Voltage, and Ventilation
Most dryers run on a 240-volt circuit, roughly double the voltage of a standard household outlet, which raises the stakes of any electrical mistake. Gas dryers add a second risk entirely: a gas connection that, if handled incorrectly, can lead to a leak.

- Better left to a professional: Any repair involving the heating element, the gas line on a gas dryer, or the electrical connection itself. The 240-volt circuit and, on gas models, the gas line are not places to learn by trial and error.
